Delhi Air Pollution AQI 551: Severe Weather, Fog, and Slow Winds Affect Health

Increasing effect of pollution and cold in Delhi

Pollution wreaks havoc in Delhi, people falling sick due to poisonous air. These days, it is constantly feeling cold and sudden changes are being seen in the weather. At the same time, the condition of air pollution in Delhi has also become serious. According to the Air Quality Index (AQI) at around 7 am on Thursday, the highest AQI of 551 was recorded in Okhla, which was found to be at a dangerous level. This figure shows that the level of air pollution has increased a lot and it is very harmful for health

Similarly, AQI 521 was also recorded in Anand Vihar, which has become a matter of concern for the residents here. This level of pollution is especially dangerous for children, the elderly and people suffering from respiratory diseases. At this level of pollution, the particles (PM2.5) and gases present in the air are having a bad effect on the respiratory system

At this time, due to increasing cold in Delhi, people are wrapped in their warm clothes, but due to the increasing level of pollution, people also face difficulty in going out. Experts believe that if such pollution is not controlled soon, it can have an even more serious effect on people’s health.

Strong winds gave relief after dense fog, Delhi’s weather improved

There has been a lot of change in the weather in Delhi these days. This morning, the minimum level of visibility at IGI Airport has been recorded at 300 meters, whereas a day earlier it was zero. This situation was created due to fog and pollution and along with strong winds, there was some relief. Due to strong winds, the weather became cool, due to which the day’s temperature is likely to remain relatively low. Today’s minimum temperature is estimated to be 17 degrees and the maximum temperature is between 28 to 29 degrees

What does the Meteorological Department say

According to RK Jenamani, senior scientist of the Meteorological Department, many changes can be seen in the weather due to fog and strong winds in Delhi. The effect of smog remains even during the day and due to less sunlight, most of the temperatures cannot increase much. However, despite strong winds, the air quality remains in the severe category. Today at 8 am, Delhi’s AQI (Air Quality Index) has been recorded at 428, which indicates extreme pollution. Most areas of Delhi are still suffering from severe pollution level.

Wednesday’s weather

On Wednesday, for the first time in this winter season, the air quality in Delhi has reached the severe category. The AQI crossed 400, and smog prevailed throughout the day. An increase in air quality was also seen in other cities of NCR. Delhi has had the worst air quality across the country. However, experts believe that this situation may worsen in the next few days

To deal with this situation, the Delhi government needs to take more concrete steps so that there is no negative impact on the health of the citizens.

Fog and slow winds are the main reasons

Fog and slow winds are being cited as the main reason for the deterioration in air quality in Delhi. According to the information received from the Decision Support System of IITM Pune, vehicle emissions have contributed the most to the pollution level in Delhi on Wednesday, which is estimated to be 13.3 percent. Apart from this, major pollutants like PM 2.5 and PM 10 are also responsible for this situation.

The main reason for Delhi’s pollution reaching the ‘severe’ category was dense fog and slow winds, however, after Thursday, the situation is expected to improve due to the increase in wind speed.

Therefore, imposing Grape 3 restrictions with immediate effect has been avoided. The committee has decided that if the AQI (Air Quality Index) level stabilises on Thursday and then starts coming down, then Graph 3 restrictions will not be imposed.
