Trump and Biden exchanged 29 seconds of respect at the White House and met after a brief public courtesy call, followed by a nearly two-hour meeting behind closed doors. Politics always has a performance aspect, and this time on Wednesday morning, President Biden and President-elect Trump publicly demonstrated their respect and goodwill for one another.

Biden and Donald Trump shook hands, despite years of antagonism and accusations. Donald Trump called Biden crooked and a communist and promised to investigate his administration. Biden called Trump a dictator who was trying to rig the election and violate democracy.

However, Biden on Wednesday vowed to honor the traditions that have been part of the peaceful transfer of power. He assured Trump that he was ready to help him get whatever he needed, even though Donald Trump decided to ignore these traditions four years ago.

Trump stood in the Oval Office and said, “I appreciate the change.” It was as simple as it could be. Just two weeks ago, Trump would regularly mock Biden, calling him weak and crazy. But now, he addressed Biden simply as “Joe” and praised his hospitality.
