Tensions in Ukraine: Biden’s missile policy and the opinions of global leaders The Biden administration has taken a major strategic step by allowing Ukraine to use US-made ATACMS long-range missiles. This is the first time Ukraine has received permission to use these missiles to attack targets inside Russia. Earlier, the US had blocked such action for fear of escalating the conflict .
The ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 300 kilometers, give Ukraine the opportunity to target military bases, infrastructure and ammunition depots. Experts believe these missiles could be used against North Korean and Russian troops in the Kursk region.
Putin’s reaction:
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the move as “changing the nature of the conflict”. He had already warned that any such move could lead to a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
Differences in the Trump camp
The reaction from Donald Trump and his allies was mixed. Trump Jr. called it a “step towards the Third World War”, while Trump’s national security adviser Michael Waltz indicated that Trump might be in favour of rapid delivery of such weapons, to pressure Russia into negotiations.
Zelensky and Western countries’ views:
Ukrainian and Western diplomats have seen it as a “symbolic victory”. However, they have warned that the move may not be decisive and further efforts will be needed to end the conflict.
Possibility of aggressive Russian response:
Russian Senator Andrei Klishas condemned the decision as a threat to the existence of the Ukrainian state, while Vladimir Dzhabarov called it a “huge step towards the Third World War”.
