Legacy of Bal Thackeray: Uddhav Sena Prevails, Amit Thackeray Left Behind. Uddhav Sena Outpaces Raj Thackeray’s Son Amit. Raj Thackeray’s son Amit Thackeray (MNS) is trailing after initial counting of votes in Maharashtra’s Mahim Assembly seat, while Mahesh Swatant of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena is leading. This election was particularly important as it was linked to the political legacy of the “Thackeray family”.
Election Result Analysis:
Importance of Mahim seat:
The Mahim seat carries forward the political legacy of Maharashtra’s “Thackeray family”. This seat has become important for both Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena is leading in this seat, and Mahesh Swatant is trying to re-establish the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray.
Counting begins:
As of 9:30 am, the BJP was leading in 154 seats in Maharashtra, while the Congress and its Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies were ahead in only 91 seats.
Brainstorming on Mahim seat:
The contest in Mahim assembly constituency is extremely interesting as this was the first time Amit Thackeray, Raj Thackeray’s son, was in the fray. At the same time, the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena also shared their strategies on this seat.
Historical significance of Mahim:
Mahim is the birthplace of Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, from where the slogan “Awaaz Konecha – Shiv Sena Sencha” echoed on the streets. However, now this original Shiv Sena has split into three camps – Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, Raj Thackeray’s MNS, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.
Situation during the election:
There were many reasons for the focus to be on the Mahim seat this year. Firstly, it was Amit Thackeray’s first election, and secondly, it was one of the “friendly fight” seats where Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and BJP supported Amit Thackeray.
The BJP and Shinde faction pitted Amit Thackeray against Shiv Sena’s Sada Sarvankar.
Other Maharashtra Assembly results:
Elections for all 288 seats of the Maharashtra Assembly were held in a single phase on November 20. Both the Mahayuti (BJP, Shinde faction) and the Mahavikas Aghadi (Congress, Shiv Sena Uddhav faction and NCP) campaigned fiercely against each other.
History of political conflict:
The Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024 was a historic election, following the Shiv Sena split in 2022 and the NCP split in 2023. The election was crucial for both major parties as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance sought to retain power while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi aimed to extend its recent gains in Maharashtra.
The lead of Mahesh Swatant of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena in the Mahim assembly election shows that the Thackeray family’s political legacy is still strong. Amit Thackeray, on the other hand, had to fall short in this election. The election results will impact the politics of Maharashtra in the times to come, especially in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
