Effect of Cyclone Fengal: Rain, flood likely in Chennai. Chennai, surrounding districts and Puducherry are receiving continuous rainfall due to cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’. Due to this, bus, train and flight services have also been stopped. Administration teams have evacuated people from different areas to safer places.

Flood and rain alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that there is a possibility of flash floods and heavy rains in many districts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karnataka in the next 24 hours and along with this all the people have been told to stay away from these places. Some of the major areas which come under the affected districts are – Chennai, Vellore, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri, Chittoor, and Chamarajanagar.

Affected services and relief work

  • Waterlogging in hospitals: The premises of two government hospitals in Chromepet, Chennai were filled with ankle-deep water. Along with all this, the people who are suffering from the flood are not getting timely treatment. If this continues, many people will lose their lives.
  • Impact on flights: 55 flights canceled, 19 diverted at Chennai airport.
  • Relief work: Work to remove waterlogging continues with 1,700 motor pumps.
  • Food supply: Greater Chennai Corporation distributed 2.32 lakh food packets.

Government response

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reviewed the relief work. Health Minister announced camps for medical assistance. The administration has deployed special teams in the affected areas. To help the people.

Update on cyclone ‘Fengal’

Strong winds and heavy rains continue due to the cyclone. IMD said that the center of the cyclone is close to Puducherry and the situation will become more clear in the next few hours.

Precautionary measures

  • 200 people from low-lying areas in relief camps. – Fallen trees have been removed.
  • 6 subways have been temporarily closed.
