Kashmir Welcomes Winter: Snow Covers Gulmarg and Other Regions. Cold has knocked in the Kashmir valley. Gulmarg and other high altitude areas have received fresh snowfall, while rain in the plains has increased the feeling of cold. The Meteorological Department has predicted improvement in the weather from next week.
Snowfall in Gulmarg and other areas
Snowfall started in Gulmarg from Saturday morning, covering the greenery with a white sheet of snow. This has not only increased the attraction of the tourist spot, but more tourists are also expected to arrive here in the coming days.
- Gurez Valley, Machil in Kupwara, Mughal Road in Shopian, and other high altitude areas also recorded the first snowfall of this season.
- Sonamarg received 3 inches of snowfall, while Zojila Pass and Meenamarg area of Drass received 4 to 5 inches of snow.
Impact on transport
The Srinagar-Leh national highway has been temporarily closed due to snowfall.
- Traffic has been halted in Sonamarg and Zojila due to snowfall.
- Surface transport has been disrupted on important routes like Zojila, Razdan Pass, Sadhna Pass, and Sinthan Top.
Tourist excitement
The snowfall has thrilled the tourists. Many tourists were seen enjoying the snowfall in Zojila and Sonamarg.
“This snowfall made our trip memorable,” said a tourist group.
Temperature drops
Due to rain and snowfall, temperatures across the valley have dropped sharply:
- Gulmarg: 1.2°C
- Srinagar: 12.2°C
- Kupwara: 7.3°C
Weather department warnings and forecasts
- Dry weather is expected from November 17 to 23.
- The weather department has advised caution while travelling in high altitude areas.
- Travellers have been advised to plan their journey keeping in mind slippery roads and possible disruptions.
