Summit of Muslim countries: Leaders of Muslim countries from all over the world have gathered in Riyadh. This summit has been organized mainly with the aim of discussing the ongoing war in Gaza and Lebanon and regional stability. Saudi media reported that Arab and Islamic leaders have decided to take immediate steps due to Israeli attacks in Palestine and Lebanon.
Condemnation of violence in Gaza and Lebanon
In this summit, the leaders of Arab and Muslim countries are unitedly discussing the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Lebanon. During the meeting organized by the Cairo-based Arab League and the Jeddah-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Riyadh last year, the attacks of the Israeli army in Gaza were also strongly criticized. According to the Health Ministry of Gaza, about 44 thousand people have lost their lives in Israeli attacks, including women and children. There has also been heavy loss of life due to violence in Lebanon.
What is the message behind this summit?
This summit being held in Saudi Arabia is being considered as an attempt to send a message to the newly elected US President Donald Trump. According to Anna Jacobs of the International Crisis Group, the leaders’ intentions during this summit also include attracting the attention of the Trump administration. This summit provides an opportunity to regional leaders to give their expectations and suggestions in American policies. Through this, an attempt will be made to give a message of reducing tension in the region and stopping Israeli attacks.
Support to Donald Trump and Israel
During his previous tenure, Trump strongly supported Israel. He recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and also shifted the embassy of Washington there. Trump supported Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law.
Message to trust Saudi
Omar Karim, an expert on Saudi politics at the University of Birmingham, says the summit is an attempt to signal to Trump that he can trust Saudi Arabia as a representative of the Muslim world. If the US wants to expand its interests in the region, Saudi Arabia may be the most suitable option for it.
