Tourist Deaths in Vang Vieng: Laos Government Vows Justice. The Laos government has mourned the deaths of six foreign tourists in Vang Vieng due to suspected methanol poisoning and promised justice to them. Two Danish, two Australians, an American and a British citizen lost their lives in the incident.
Cause of death and investigation
The tourists fell ill after spending the night in the small riverside town of Vang Vieng, a popular destination among backpackers. The Laos government said it was investigating the incident very thoroughly and was searching for the culprits to bring them to justice as soon as possible.
However, information related to the incident and the investigation is limited due to tight media control in Laos.
Tributes to Australian victims
The deaths of Australian teenagers Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones, who were on holiday together, have left their community stunned. Holly, from Melbourne, died in a Bangkok hospital, while Bianca died a day earlier.
The Beaumaris Football Club, for which the women played, paid tribute to them, saying “two beautiful lives have been lost.” Their teammates expressed their condolences by tying the club’s blue and yellow ribbons in their honour.
British and other tourists killed
British citizen Simone White, 28, also died from methanol poisoning in what her family called a tragic incident. Details about the other victims, American and Danish tourists, have not yet been released.
Tourism and history of Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng, located in central Laos, was previously known for its “tubing” and party culture. However, strict restrictions were imposed after the death of tourists in 2012. Now, the city has become a center of attraction for Chinese and South Korean tourists.
Danger of methanol poisoning
Methanol, which is tasteless and odorless, is often mixed in cheap alcohol. This poisoning can quickly cause serious illness. Thai authorities confirmed that Australian tourist Bianca Jones died due to swelling in the brain caused by high levels of methanol.
The Laos Foreign Ministry has expressed deep condolences and grief to the families of the deceased.
International warning
Many countries, including the UK, have warned their citizens to buy alcohol only from licensed liquor stores. Otherwise they too may have to face such an incident and may even lose their lives.
Lessons for Society
This incident highlights the need to focus attention on the dangers of methanol poisoning and to ensure safety standards in the production and distribution of alcohol.
The Laos government’s promise that the perpetrators will be brought to justice could be an important step forward for the families and communities affected by this incident.
