During the freedom struggle and after that, Patel made his important contribution in the development of India while working under the leadership of Nehru. On 1 August 1947, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru extended a formal invitation to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to join his cabinet.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel wrote in his reply: I hope that my services will always be available to you and that you will always maintain your loyalty and devotion to me. Our alliance is unbreakable and this is our strength. This message reflects their deep mutual relations and their loyalty to Nehru.

Sardar Patel took many steps to ensure the stability and security of India after independence. He cautioned the RSS not to impose its objectives by force. He clearly stated: The Sangh Parivar wants to impose a Hindu state or Hindu culture by force and no government can tolerate this.

On Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s 60th birthday (14 November, 1950), Patel mentioned his close relationship with him in his article:
In the last two years of our difficult lives, no one can understand the work that Nehruji has done for the country. This shows how deeply Sardar Patel admired Nehru’s leadership.

The assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948 shook the entire country. Patel was deeply shocked by Gandhiji’s assassination. Patel was indirectly blamed for the assassination, but Nehru showed solidarity by standing with him in this crisis.
Nehru wrote
With the death of Bapu we now have to face a difficult world. We have to face this crisis together. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel also assured Nehru that he would work together with him in this difficult time.
Sardar Patel’s stand against RSS and communalism
Patel clearly warned that communal ideology can never be accepted in a diverse country like India. He had a strict eye on the activities of RSS, and considered it against the values of the Indian Constitution.

Sardar Patel is known as the “Iron Man” because he showed unparalleled leadership and determination in integrating more than 540 princely states of India. His success proved to be a milestone for the integrity and unity of India.
