Deep depression in southwest Bay of Bengal: Heavy rains likely in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

The deep depression formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal is now located about 310 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry and about 480 km southeast of Chennai. This information has been given by S. Balachandran, Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Center.

Impact of pressure and possibility of rain

Mr. Balachandran has said that this depression is likely to move towards the northwest direction and may pass between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram by the morning of the 30th.

Under the influence of this depression, widespread moderate rain is expected over most parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 2-3 days. Heavy rains will increase the cold and the chances of people falling ill will also increase.

Heavy and extremely heavy rainfall warning

In the next 24 hours heavy rainfall is likely at some places over delta districts, Chengalpattu and Viluppuram.

Tomorrow (30th), extremely heavy rainfall is forecast at some places over delta districts, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry and Chengalpattu.

Need for vigilance and preparedness

Keeping in mind this warning of the Meteorological Department, the local administration has been advised to remain alert and take necessary steps. Farmers and fishermen have been asked to be especially vigilant, as there is a possibility of high waves and strong winds in the sea. The cold wind will destroy all the crops, which will cause more loss to the farmers and fishermen, due to which they will not be able to do their work, this will become a big problem.

The weather agency has issued a red weather warning, indicating extremely heavy rain exceeding 24.4 cm at one or two places of some delta and north coastal districts on Friday (November 29, 2024) and Saturday (November 30, 2024) as the system approaches.

Heavy rain likely in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: Impact of weather system

The existing weather system in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is likely to cross the coast as a deep depression. Under its influence, many parts of the state will receive moderate rain, while heavy to extremely heavy rains have been predicted in some districts.

The weather department has said that the following districts and areas may receive extremely heavy rains on Friday

Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam

Apart from these, Ranipet, Tiruchi and eight other districts may also receive heavy rains on Friday.

Rainfall situation in Chennai and neighbouring districts

  • Rainfall activity will increase over Chennai and its neighbouring districts from Wednesday evening.
  • Very heavy rainfall is likely over Chennai, Ariyalur and Thanjavur on Friday.
  • Red weather alert has been issued for Chennai and its neighbouring districts on Saturday.

Extremely heavy rainfall warning on Saturday

When the weather system crosses the Tamil Nadu coast on Saturday, the following areas may receive extremely heavy rainfall:

  • Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts
  • Puducherry

Administrative alert and preparedness

In view of the alert issued by the Meteorological Department, the local administration has been advised to strengthen vigilance and disaster management measures.

Fishermen have also been warned not to venture into the sea and people living in coastal areas need to be prepared to avoid possible inundation.
