There used to be a Brahmin. The Brahmin had a daughter. Despite being endowed with all the virtues, she was not able to get married. Once a saint came to that Brahmin’s house and was very pleased with the girl’s nature. He blessed the girl with a long life. Then the Brahmin asked the saint about his daughter’s marriage. The saint said that there is no marriage line in the girl’s hand. The Brahmin asked the saint what is the solution for this? Then the saint said that a washerwoman’s family named Sona lives in a nearby village.

If your daughter goes there and serves the washerwoman and the washerwoman happily gives her her Suhaag, then your daughter can get married. After this, the girl went to the washerwoman’s house and happily gives her her Suhaag, then your daughter can get married. After this, the girl took a vow to serve her by going to the washerwoman’s house. From this day onwards, every morning before sunrise, the girl goes to the washerman’s house, does all the work there and quietly returns to her home.

The washerwoman gets very happy seeing all the household work done. She thought that her daughter-in-law does all the work. One day she told her daughter-in-law that you are so good, you finish all the household work. Then her daughter-in-law told her that it is not like that, I keep sleeping.

Then a question arose in the minds of both that who is doing the household work? The next day both of them started waiting to know this, then they saw that a girl comes, does all the household work and goes away quietly. Then the washerwoman asked her who are you? And why are you doing all this? The girl told her whole story to the washerwoman. On this Sona felt pity for the girl and the next morning she said that she would give her Suhaag.

The next day was the day of Somvati Amavasya. Sona was aware that if she gave her Suhaag to the girl, then her husband would die, but still she fasted the next day, went to the girl’s house and put vermilion in the girl’s maang. As soon as she did this, her husband died. While returning, Sona circumambulated the Peepal tree. When she returned home, she saw that her husband was alive, she blessed God and since then the tradition of fasting on this day started.
